Joint Statement Regarding the safe evacuation of UN and INGO staff and family members in Loikaw, Karenni State
18 November 2023
Through coordination between the frontline commanders of the Karenni Revolutionary Forces, the Interim Executive Council of Karenni State(IEC), and the National Unity Government (NUG), the offensive attacks were temporarily lowered to safely evacuate the 228 employees and family members of United Nations organizations (UN) and non-governmental international organizations (INGOs) based in Loikaw, Karenni State.Â
Due to such arrangements, the convoy of 33 vehicles carrying the above UN and INGO staff and family members was able to leave Loikaw and move safely to Taunggyi.
Although UN and INGO staff and family members were able to leave safely, many civilians remained trapped inside Loikaw and are still in the danger zone. In addition, basic food, medicine, and shelter are urgently in need for more than 35,000 displaced people.
For those urgent needs, INGOs, including the UN, need to implement cross-border aid programs. The terrorist Myanmar military council must allow civilians who are trapped in Loikaw to safely leave to secure areas. The National Unity Government (NUG) and the Interim Executive Council (IEC) of Karenni State express our special gratitude to the Karenni Revolutionary Forces and all civil society organizations who helped on the ground.
