Interim Executive Council of Karenni State
Statement No. 3/2025
29 March 2025
Statement Regarding the Earthquake Disaster
On 28 March 2025, at approximately 1:00 PM Myanmar Standard Time, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale struck, centred near Sagaing City, causing widespread impact across Myanmar. Particularly in Sagaing and Mandalay Regions, roads, bridges, buildings, including religious structures, and irrigation dams collapsed or were damaged, and there were numerous public casualties. We are deeply saddened by this.
Karenni State also experienced the effects of this earthquake. Although there was no extensive damage, the public is experiencing fear and panic, and the situation requires continued vigilance regarding the danger of earthquakes.
As a consequence of the earthquake’s impact, there is a possibility that the public may increasingly face famine, and we are deeply concerned about potential adverse consequences. Due to the potential for such dangers and difficulties, the public must cooperate with relevant local administration bodies and social relief organizations to urgently undertake preparedness measures for natural disasters. The illegal coup military may exploit the earthquake disaster to impose more severe oppression and restrictions, and it is necessary to respond with great caution.
We urge international governments and international aid organizations to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the people suffering from the earthquake’s impact across the country, including in Sagaing and Mandalay Regions. Furthermore, to ensure that humanitarian aid directly reaches the grassroots population who are truly in need, we strongly urge collaboration with local civil society organizations.
Should there be members of the public wishing to seek refuge in Karenni State due to the earthquake disaster, we inform you that refuge is available, and we will provide welcome and support to the best of our ability. For emergency needs, please contact the Interim Executive Council of Karenni State, Department of Humanitarian and Rehabilitation (Signal No.: +66 955751317) and the Department of Home Affairs/Emergency Relief Division (Signal No.: +66 640385958). The Interim Executive Council of Karenni State will cooperate with forces within Karenni State to provide support and assistance to the people who have suffered losses and damage due to the earthquake.
